ARE ELECTRIC BOILERS COST EFFECTIVE?
Traditional gas boilers work under the same principle as the electric boilers. Their only difference is that they use electricity to heat water as opposed to gas. Electric boilers are hence best suited for areas with little or no access to the main gas supply.
Some cities also have made it a policy to ban gas boilers because of the dangers they possess. The electric boiler provides the benefits of wet central heating without the need for gas supply. Gas has always been the traditional way of heating one’s home, but the UK home market is slowly being taken over by the electric boilers. Critics might term the move from gas boilers to electric water heaters as expensive, but considering the benefits and the safety repercussions of gas boilers, it is worth it.
DO ELECTRIC BOILERS NEED SERVICING?
All boilers require regular servicing to maintain their optimum working conditions. Maximum efficiency of the boiler is not only contributing to lowered energy bills, it also aids towards reducing your carbon footprint. Regular maintenance also allows the engineer to catch small issues before they turn into significant, expensive problems. Minor matters can evolve into more adverse malfunctions which may mean a new boiler.
Insurance companies also require you to regularly services your boilers as part of the policy. Failure to do so might invalidate the warranty in case of any unintended malfunction. Insurance providers usually require that the boilers are kept in safe working conditions. Failure to maintain the safety of your boiler may result in higher premiums.
HOW LONG WOULD YOU EXPECT A BOILER TO LAST?
Ideally, the working life of a boiler should be between 10-15 years. To maximise the lifespan of your boiler, it is advisable to seek a service that would provide regular or annual maintenance to avoid small issues and malfunctions. A boiler that is kept at maximum working conditions will last longer than a boiler which has never been serviced.
WHAT DO THEY DO IN BOILER SERVICE?
An engineer will remove the boiler casing to examine the inner components. They then check if the boiler is working safely and efficiently. They then use a flue gas analyser to determine whether the correct mixture of gas and air is burning. They would then check if the connections are clean and are in excellent condition.
Look after your boiler, and your boiler will look after you. This unassuming piece of kit is responsible for all the heating and hot water in most homes, so it’s essential to give it a bit of TLC now and then.
